Hydrocotyle leucocephala also known as Brazilian Pennywort is a great plant for midground to background or surface decoration. It has thin spindly stems and lily pad shaped leaves.

Pennywort is one of the easiest plants in cultivation and is suitable for almost any aquarium. It isn't at all picky about light or carbon dioxide levels and will do well in tanks where many other species don't. Warm temperatures are not a problem, making it suitable for planted discus tanks.

Planting Instructions

Stem plants are usually cuttings of plants that normally don't come with roots. This is how stem plants are sold in the aquatic plant industry although at times my stem plants may come with roots because I have been growing them out. All stem plants come with a plant weight that holds the plant in place and is safe for your tank.

To plant just let the weight lay on your substrate and the stems will grow roots throughout your substrate. You can also plant the tips, about 1/4" in your substrate if you prefer.

Love this plant!
Arrived in great condition! Lots of stems and leaves are in amazing shape! This plant makes an interesting addition to any tank. Easy to care for and a very fast grower. Shrimp and timid fish love to hang out among the lily pad looking leaves. My dwarf sparkling gourami has mad this plant his new home!

Beautiful Plant
Brazilian Pennywort, a plant that grows very much like a floating vine, is not only a vigorous grower that is easy to tend, but a truly beautiful one as well. Some people aren't fond of its characteristic of producing hanging white roots and prune the roots off. On the other hand, I find this characteristic visually interesting. The plant's leaves are reminiscent of small lily pads. If you have a low tech tank like I do, you'll find that the plant performs well with low light and is so vigorous that in no time you'll be pruning it back before it takes over the tank. Highly recommended.

My Pennywort
The penny wort arrived yesterday, after only a 3 day journey, in great shape. Never having bought plants on line before I've nothing to go by but believe the plants I received will be the standard I go by. Packaged in water, insulated, and they came with appropriate instructions. This AM they are fine. Kudos all the way around. Gregg

Finally! I have living pennywort!
I have bought this plant so many times (elsewhere) with miserable results. The first time I saw pennywort in it's glory in someone else's tank, I was smitten, but I never could get it to live in my tanks. I bought from other places and it came from those other vendors by the yard, (!!) but always melted and died in short order. Based on reviews here, and my satisfaction with other PAC plants, I dared order some. I LOVE it! The description says"spindly stems." That was my previous experience, but so not this time. I got bundles of very sturdy stems 6" to 8" long. So sturdy, actually, that I thought they had been grown as land plants that would soon die in my aquarium. I was very happily wrong. The same aquariums, lights, etc. that caused my other pennywort purchases to melt away and die are having PAC pennywort grow and flourish! I love the step-stairs lily-pad look as it grows long and tall. The leaves are actually quarter and half-dollar size, and it's growing extra leaves in the nodes. There's whorled tufts of long white roots along the stems, and it is just the prettiest plant ever! In a month, I have been able to clip away some for my other tanks. Thank you!

too delicate
I made a large purchase to test which plants can hold up in my very active tank and this one missed the mark. All it takes is one of my fish to swim by it and a branch snaps off. This won't make it a week unfortunately.

Favorite plant!
Low tech nano tank here - I keep the pennywort in a bunch with the plant weight simply resting on the gravel substrate. No special care needed, and it grows fast enough that changes are visible every day or two. My fish love to explore around the branches and the shrimp really seem to enjoy crawling on it or swimming to it to graze or rest. It adds a lush appearance to the tank and is easy to keep green and beautiful. I take it out and trim the bottom ends of the stems about every other week and remove any melted leaves, then just put it back in place. Love this plant and the beauty it brings to my aquascape!

Definitely getting more!
I LOVE this plant. A nice, light green, generous portions, and extremely easy to plant. At the moment I'm just floating it in some betta tanks and it looks great and provides excellent cover. Going to have to come back for more!
